Terraced House Front Garden

This couple asked for a planting scheme to revitalise their front garden. No lawn was required so I suggested we change the layout from a straight front path to a curved one to create different-shaped areas and to give privacy to the glazed front door. Concrete bands provide structure through their order and repetition, the informal planting style contrasting with this.

A palette of yellows with lilac and blues are not confined to flowers, with yellows found in the evergreen leaf of a euonymus shrub, the blue-grey leaves in the lavender and perovskia. Year round structure and interest is provided by the privet hedge, shiny bergenia leaves and clipped box shapes. Blossom of the small tree and spring bulbs are followed by yellow irises and lilac wisteria. After these, blue salvias, lavender and a yellow climbing rose, to mention a few, take up the colour theme. Aromatic plants along the path and by the front door provide a welcoming scent for any visitor.

The simple design meant I could include the plant names in the design drawing. I sourced the plants myself and supervised the hard and soft landscaping.
